House and Garden Exhibition Opening

House and Garden Exhibition Opening

The aim of the exhibition was to introduce both contemporary and historical artworks related to Kafkárna and its garden.

The exhibition documented the evolution and changes of the historical sculpture studio and its further use as the Centre for Art and Ecology UMPRUM. The exhibition introduced a transformation of the space, its opening for international collaboration and the efforts to build a community around the studio’s garden. It also mapped a variety of events that took place for the local residents as well as the wider public. All of this was backed up by physical documentation including historical photographs, videos and mainly works of art connected to the site.

Kafkárna is mainly a place full of life and creativity. Therefore, the exhibition was not limited only to showcasing artworks, a great emphasis was also placed on providing a lively, relevant additional program. The visitors could experience its atmosphere first hand during a variety of events, which were not confined only to the space of the gallery. Instead, they took place all over the UMPRUM building and even outside, on the nearby Jan Palach square.

The accompanying program of the exhibition consisted of a guided tour of Kafkárna, cooking vegetarian and vegan dishes at the school’s cafeteria, a collective making of a tablecloth at the Illustration and Graphics studio led by the group Knedlík or a lecture about degrowth and culture by Šárka Zahálková.

The exhibition was curated by Kateřina Vídenová and Amálie Bulandrová.
