Kafkárna

Inventory

Most of the information about the historical events, people, experiences, and emotions associated with Kafkárna has been preserved primarily through the memories of a small number of people who witnessed them firsthand. For this reason, during the symposium Community: Building and Living Shared Environments, held at Kafkárna in early May 2023, Vincent Klusák, Matěj Peterka, and Alžběta Žabová decided to undertake a process of cataloguing Kafkárna:

“At the time, it seemed to us that it would be quite straightforward — during the symposium, we walked through the garden with Kurt Gebauer and Matouš Lipus, mapping the locations of the sculptures and tracing their authorship. We also went through various archival materials and tried to gain a comprehensive understanding of Kafkárna’s history. However, our initial impression soon gave way to surprise at the multilayered web of relationships running through Kafkárna, and to the realisation that unless someone who witnessed them firsthand reveals them to us, there is no other way for us to learn about them. This is also why documenting the entire material and historical history of Kafkárna is such a complex and long-term project that its eventual form would deserve a monograph of its own.” Vincent Klusák
